Sometimes, it seems like the world is conspiring against your goal of glowing skin: stress, age, lack of sleep, temperature, and hormones to name a few. Pimples often choose to present themselves on the morning of big events, and wrinkles caused by stress lead to more stress…and more wrinkles. Luckily, we have researched and tested a list of easy beauty hacks to make your skin fresh, dewy, and effortless.
Although drinking water should be a given, most people do not drink the recommended amount (that’s 2 liters a day – we know you’re probably at least a liter behind). Your skin’s glow is directly linked to its moisture level, and drinking lots of water is a healthy, refreshing way to keep it supple and dewy. Carry a water bottle with you on the go and you’ll find yourself drinking from it all the time. While the popular Swell bottles are guaranteed to keep your H2O ice cold for hours, you don’t need to spend the big bucks for hydration – just make sure you’re drinking!
This one is pretty self-explanatory. It doesn’t matter if you’re 16 or 60; daily moisturizing is absolutely essential for healthy, glowing skin. There are a multitude of wonderful moisturizers on the market, for all different types of skin. After washing your face, it’s a smart idea to moisturize while your face is still damp. The moisturizer will lock in the water, and keep your skin looking fresh all day. Dehydrated skin also leads to premature aging, so keep your face moisturized now and you’ll appreciate the pay-off later.
Not just at the beach, on vacation, or because your mom has been nagging you about it. Daily sunscreen use can make a world of difference in preventing wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, freckles, moles, and age spots. Signs of aging can start to show up as early as some people’s mid-20’s, and starting a healthy skincare routine will work wonders to prevent sun damage. Don’t forget about your neck, chest, and hands, either!
Find your retinol
Retinol is a chemical compound and a variation of vitamin A. It is a very popular chemical addition to many anti-aging products, mainly as a result of its proven success to prevent signs of aging. Retinol encourages cell turnover in skin, which means that using retinol helps your skin to regenerate itself. Retinol will improve your skin’s firmness and even tone, and have you glowing from sunrise to sunset. Retinol products can be expensive, but the results are undeniable.
Another one of great beauty tips for glowing skin is to use chemical exfoliants. Why chemical, you might ask? When you use a physical exfoliant on your delicate facial skin (such as a facial cleanser with micro beads), it can create tiny tears on the surface of your skin, and damage your natural moisture barrier. This can lead to discoloration, wrinkles, and acne. No thanks! Chemical exfoliation refers to alpha-hydroxyl-acids (AHAs) such as lactic acid and glycolic acid. AHAs exfoliate the dead skin from your pores without damaging the surface. Clearing the dead skin cells from your face with an exfoliant is a great way to combat dull, lifeless skin and improve your glow.
Daily vitamins are excellent for overall health, but not all vitamins are created equal – we’ve narrowed down the ones that will give you a glow from the inside out. Vitamin A, Biotin, B, and C are all essential for healthy skin, but there is a frontrunner in the pack: vitamin E. Vitamin E can be found in foods such as almonds, peanuts, and leafy greens, but can also be applied topically to your skin. Why not both?
Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep every night – and let’s be honest, most adults probably don’t get them. During sleep our bodies regenerate and mend themselves, which is why we’re encouraged to get lots of sleep when we are ill. Skin repair is no exception, and if your body is not getting an adequate amount of time to regenerate, then your skin will suffer. We know it’s hard to maintain with a busy schedule, but if you make the effort to pry yourself from Pinterest and hop in bed an hour early – your skin will thank you.
Take off your makeup before bed, no exceptions!
Let’s be honest, we have all had a late night where we fall asleep with our makeup on and then wake up feeling, well, not so fresh. Sleeping with makeup on will clog your pores, cause breakouts, and wreak havoc on your skin’s natural moisture barrier. Plus, who wants to get foundation and mascara all over their pillow? For the laziest among us, makeup wipes are very convenient to stash in your purse, or keep handy in the nightstand. A couple of quick swipes, and you can fall asleep makeup and guilt-free.
Breaking a healthy sweat on a regular basis will improve your skin, your body, and your health. Exercise serves two purposes towards beautiful skin. Exercising has been proven to reduce stress levels, and stress is a leading cause of skin problems such as acne and wrinkles. It will also encourage you to drink more water (see water rant above), and it will flush toxins out of your skin – leaving you with tons of energy and a great glow.
